Ferdinand N. Van Branteghem
January 18, 1925 ~ April 16, 2008
Greece: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at age 83 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Lawson. Survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley (Sanders) Van Branteghem; loving daughters, Susan (Larry) Ansel of Michigan, Linda (Dan) Dailey of Texas, Karen (Sam) Palermo, Debra (Mike) Dear; sister, Agnes (Ed) Ackley; grandchildren, Christopher & Katie Ansel, Sean & Jenna Dailey, Sam Palermo, Jr., Kari & Geoffrey Dear, Rosgene (Frank) Bodnar, Paul Palermo, Leah Palermo (Lance Zammit); several nieces and nephews. Ferd was very active in many military organizations, including past Secretary, Treasurer and State President of MOAA, Co-chair of the Veterans Memorial Committee and past Commander of the M&E Council.
Friends may call Monday 3-7 PM at the Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home 1075 Long Pond Road. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 11:00 AM at Our Mother of Sorrows Church. Interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Interlakes Hematology & Oncology or the Unity Health Foundation in his memory.

Dear Shirley & Family,
I feel honored to have known Ferd for so many years and was blessed to have him for a friend. We worked together many times for MOAA/GVA. My prayers to the family and especially you Shirlely dluring this difficult time. Ferd was a special person. God Bless, Love Diane
Ferd was a great guy to know and work with. We shared many hours worrying and working together on the Armed Forces Day Luncheons over the years. When Ferd had a task to accomplish – it was always completed and done well.
Ferd, as I guess everyone called him, was a treasure! He became almost one of the family. During the 1960’s and 70’s he built us a garage, renewed a 1920’s kitchen, fashioned a bedroom in the attic, built closets in the basement, all this he did midst the ‘helter sketler’ of a large family, many of whom, particularly those of tender age, wanted to help him. Those he gave pieces of wood and let them hammer away!
We are sure he met his sufferings with great integrity, as he lived his life.

My sincere sympathies to Ferd’s entire family. He did several home projects for me back in the mid 70’s in our Malden St home, including a complete bathroom. He was a skilled craftsman. Again my sincere sympathies. Thomas Williams, Greece

There are no words to make this easier to bear. Please know I will keep the family in my prayers.
We are most blessed to have known and worked with Ferd in the GVC/MOAA. He was always a help and supportive of the many projects. We will miss seeing him at the get togethers. Shirley and the family will be in our prayers for comfort on the loss of someone so special.
