Dear Norma, Tommy, Jane and Joey, One of the most touching exchanges I ever witnessed between 2 men, was the last time these 2 saw each other. Norma brought Tom over to see Dad, and you could tell that they both knew it was close to Dad’s time. They visited for about an hour, with some long stretches of silence — not uncomfortable quiet — in between their small talk. When Tom stood to leave, he said, ‘Well, my friend, I guess this is goodbye for now.’ Dad’s response was, ‘Brother, I’ll see you on the other side.’ Then they gave each other a big bear hug. Dad went to bed that afternoon. He didn’t get up again to sit in the living to chat with Mom or us kids, or the neighbors who regularly stopped by to see how he was doing. And he died about 48 hours later. I guess we should be happy that they are together again. 75 years of friendship, and I don’t think there was ever a harsh word between them. That’s some kind of lucky. — I’m sure Dad was there to help him to the other side. Any time I feel sad or low, I will think of the 2 of them — LAUGHING! — as they always did when they were together. God bless you, and thank you for sharing Tom with the Stantons for all of these years. — I love you all and cherish the memories of all the good times we had. Kathy Stanton
