I met Scott about 12 years ago in his ‘office’ at the Lakeshore bar. He never missed a game or practice of his sons. His smile and kind demeanor made him one of my favorite customers. I have since become close with his sister Patty and my son is best friends with his nephew Brendon. I sat with him as he beamed with pride watching Brendon at the all-star game last month. Paula, Patty and family, my heart breaks for all of you. I will miss him. Elena (your Lakeshore bartender)

I met Scott in the 7th grade. I fondly remember many summer nights hanging out at Ben Cox’s house watching the boys play hoops when we were younger. I remember buying a striped t-shirt just like the ones he always used to wear so I could be just like him! (did I mention he was my first real crush?) He moved mid-way through high school and we lost touch until we met again at one of our class reunions. Even though he’d left Arcadia he found us and made a point to come! He was a great guy – always flashing that wonderful grin to all who knew him. What a hole is left when one so young leaves us. (My own husband passed away at the age of 49 so I send my sincerest condolences to his wife. and children.) Time heals…but it never forgets. May God hold you all close.

I met Scott, Paula and the kids through MCYH. I had managed several teams that Steve played on. I was surprised to read of Scotts passing. He was a good, kind, gentleman. He was always good for a joke when the going got tough. His smile was always a welcome relief when the kids had a bad hockey game. He’d crack a joke about those Buffalo and Canadian teams and how our team had gotten ‘homered’ by the officials or how the players on the other team needed to shave. The kids would laugh and then have a party in someones hotel room or play knee hockey in the hall. I guess the saying is right ‘Only the good die young.’ I will think of Scott any time I walk into Lakeshore Hockey Arena….. waiting to see him wave to me from the bar as I enter the side door… grinning from ear to ear. Those were the days. God’s rest to you Scott… kind and gentleman. My prayers are with you Paula and children.

I’m sorry to hear of Scott’s passing. I will miss his smiles and waves as I walked around the neighborhood at night. Though I didn’t know the family well, my son Ryan is good friends with Scott’s son Steve. May God grant you his blessings and strength at this difficult time.

While the neighborhood will never be the same with the passing of Mr. Root, the summers are what will the hardest time for me. Almost every summer night for the past six or seven years I would walk down the street and I couldn’t help but notice Mr. Weston and Mr. Root enjoying each other’s company either in Mr. Weston’s garage, or in the backyard with the fire pit. I always smiled because those two were the older version of Steve, Frank, Nick, and I, doing exactly the same on those nights. During a few of those summer nights I was given the privilege of having Mr. Root attend our garage gatherings, and as the more I got to know him, I was jealous for the way he lived his life. Mr. Root was always smiling, laughing, and telling jokes. Never did I see him in a bad mood. Even if he didn’t know you personally, he wouldn’t hesitate to strike up a conversation. If I can just take a small part of his happiness I know I will be a much better person. Overall, to me he was just a fun person to be around. I can’t speak for the tons of friends and family that knew him better than I did, but I will miss his laughter coming from Mr. Weston’s this summer. My prayers go out to Mrs. Root, Christine, Scott, Steve, and the rest of the family. God bless.
