Ruth H. Fitzgerald Greece: Thursday, June 17, 2021 at age 96. Predeceased by her husband, William N. Fitzgerald; son-in-law, Gary Patzwald; her brothers, Arnie and Don. Survived by her son, William (Cheryl) J. Fitzgerald; daughter, Shirley Patzwald; grandchildren, Arthur and Randolph Patzwald; companion, Wallace R. Rust; many nieces, nephews and dear friends No prior calling. Private interment in Fairfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Seneca Park Zoo in her memory.
Ever since my family moved onto Ruth’s street in 1958, Ruth immediately charmed up to us as being a truly trusted, honest, charitable, respectable, friend of great dignity. My mother greatly enjoyed sharing her gardening, square dancing and so many years teaching swimming at numerous facilities to participants from all backgrounds and walks of life. We looked forward to hearing of the trips that she enjoyed with her husband to view the eclipses. She served as an invaluable resource during my Mom’s own passing. Though our ages were different, she came to become a respectable friend and someone that could be counted on in times of need. She always had a devoted cat at her side evidencing a mutual bond that she shared with the world. We sincerely miss this kind hearted soul as we look forward to joining up again with her in the afterlife.
I had the pleasure of preparing Mrs. Fitzgerald’s (never Ruth to me) federal and state income tax returns for over 20 years. Needless to say I still say she was a fantastic lady and she will be missed. God rest her soul.
I got to know Ruth at 1st Universalist Church in downtown Rochester. She was such a dear woman, very bright, helpful, compassionate and caring. She was delightful to know, knowledgeable, kind and wise. She also made the best cookies ever! I will miss her greatly. With heartfelt sympathy to her family. Eileen Fernandez
For many years I shared a pew with Ruth on Sunday mornings. She was a fixture of the First Universalist Church and a long-time leader of its Caring Committee. She led a fascinating life, including time, as a young adult, on the Manhattan Project during WW II. She will be dearly missed.
Heartfelt condolences to Ruth’s family. I first met Ruth a number of years ago when I subbed for her in the Belles & Beaux bell choir at Bethany Presbyterian following her having a medical procedure. Over the years, our paths crossed a few other times at Wegman’s or Green Acres Nursery. She was a lovely lady–friendly, kind, and always smiling. I know her family and fiends will miss her very much. Everyone who worked with Ruth at the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf adored her. We loved her attitude and sense of humor. She was a wonderful person.
I met Ruth a few years ago thru the Greece Food Shelf and had the pleasure of regularly talking to her on the phone. She was an inspiration to me, so bright and interesting to discuss current events. The last time we spoke she told me she had volunteered at the food shelf for about 35 years, having done a lot of different things. I will miss her.
I got to know Ruth at First Universalist, and I enjoyed her very much. She was very intelligent, wise, perceptive, and thoughtful. She also seemed much younger than she was. I miss her.
