Aunt Rita had a bird that talked and sounded just like her. I remember my Dad (Chuck) calling her and I guess he talked to the bird for awhile not realizing it wasn’t her he was speaking with. We all had the best laugh – including Aunt Rita. Also, I remember when I was really little eating some of her Bread and Butter Pickles in the kitchen on Denise Rd. Yum!

When I was a child, my mom used to tell me to get Rita on the phone. I would go to the phone and wait for the operator and then say Charlotte 1452; Aunt Rita’s phone would begin to ring, I would call my mom and then the two of them would be talking for the next hour. Our phone was a party-line, but I believe Aunt Rita’s was private. I can remember mom telling other party-line interrupters that they would be off soon. Aunt Rita will be missed!

Rita was my grandmother. She was a wonderful person. She was very good to me before we moved to Florida. My father was her son Thomas Hoadley. Tom died about 6 years before his mother, After I was over my initial grief of losing my father, I realized that we would have to break the news to Grandma. I called my father’s brother David. He said that he would notify the relatives in N.Y. They decided that they would go to grandma’s the next day to tell her. When they showed up, she said to them ‘Tommy is dead.’ She knew.
