Passed away peacefully and gently into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, April 2, 2007 at the age of 89. Richard passed after a remarkably courageous battle with two major illnesses(congestive heart failure and chronic lymphoid leukemia). He is predeceased by his beloved mother, Cecilia T. Long and brother, Howard Long. Richard is survived by his sister, June V. Long; nephew and primary caregiver, Douglas W. Simms; several nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends. Richard was a beloved uncle and friend. He attended Aquinas Institute. Richard worked at and enjoyed gardening and landscaping, along with rooting for his hometown favorite, the Rochester Red Wings. He is a retired part-time U.S. Postal Service worker with many years of service and also cared for his mother for many years. Richard was a life-long resident of the old 10th Ward. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers at Rochester General Hospital and St. John’s Home for the outstanding, patient and kind care that was shown to Richard. Friends may call Monday, 4-6PM at the Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home, 1075 Long Pond Road. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Tuesday 9:30 AM at Holy Rosary Church, 418 Lexington Avenue. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to a charity of your choice in his memory.
