Fitz Harris, Major Richard J. Greece: May 3, 2017 Major Richard Fitz Harris II went home to be with the Lord. He is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Mimi Fitz Harris ‘nee Doxtater’, son, Richard J. Fitz Harris III (Mary Ann) of Chicago, brother, Lt. Col. Donald E. Fitz Harris; many loving nieces and nephews. After 20 years of active duty in the United States Army, he retired in 1960. He left Rochester in 1940 with the company ‘G’ 108th Infantry 27th NY division and served on the Island of Maui, Hawaii shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was commissioned an Infantry officer and later landed in Normandy, France and fought with the 39th Regiment 9th Infantry Division in France, Belgium & Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in action. The Army commendation Ribbon was also awarded to him covering a tour in Korea during the war. Richard was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, 108th Infantry Association, Disabled American Veterans and an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Vero Beach Florida. For many years, the family owned and operated the Fitz Harris grocery store in Rochester, NY. Major Richard’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 10th, 9:30 AM at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 5000 Mt. Read Blvd. Full Military Honors interment will follow Mass in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Mother of Sorrows Church in his memory.
