A very dear friend to The Mattie family. We so enjoyed his friendship, support and sense of humor. I especially liked meeting him at Notre Dame games and traveling the campus on our golf cart. His moving eulogy for my uncle, Father Richard Mattie, still resonates with the family. We will miss him immensely. God bless Father Moynihan and his beloved family. May he rest in peace.
Father Moynihan has been a very important part of our lives. He encouraged us to become more involved in our parish, was the reason I began the RCIA process, heard my first confession, and confirmed me. He taught us so much and was so supportive of us, even after he retired. In fact, he called us from the hospital to congratulate us on the birth of our son. Knowing he was praying for us during my pregnancy gave us such comfort. He will be dearly missed; I can still hear his warm, infectious laugh.
Father Moynihan was a wonderful friend and priest to many people. He always was there to console the grieving and encourage the sick. He will be missed by so many people. God bless him and his family. Rest in peace, Father Moynihan. Sincerely, Judy Coleman, Hornell, NY
Fr. Moynihan will be missed. He was a great priest. He was very caring and supportive of youth sports. He made it a point to attend Elmira Notre Dame girls basketball games. Just knowing he was there was like having that ‘ sixth man’ with us on the court. May God bless him and his family at this difficult time.

I had the good fortune to meet Father Jerry when he came to Elmira…It wasn’t at church but at Dunn Field where the Elmira Pioneers played. He took the game seriously and attended as many games as he could. I also was happy to have Father join my Sunday School class. It wasn’t exactly a school. It was a place where Father could enjoy his favorite cinnamon-raisin bagels, a cup of coffee, and a few shots of good Irish Whiskey. I was so proud when he called me his friend…and I’ll truly miss his stories, his jokes, and his room-filling laughter. Until that time, when we meet up again…God’s speed, my good friend.

Dear Father Moynihan ~
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Rest in Peace Dear Friend.
Father it was a pleasure to serve by your side as an alter boy at St. Ignatius for eight years. May you rest in peace.
Father Moynihan will be truly missed. He had a heart for children. He reserved his Tuesday mornings to visit classrooms at all three Holy Family Schools. The kids always were amazed that he would let them ask any question they wanted to know about. They also found out that priests have other interests, as Father would speak about his beloved Notre Dame and the Pioneers playing at Dunn Field. He did so many kind things behind the scenes, not wanting to draw attention to himself. A saint passed away and is going to be sorely missed. My image of him now in heaven, among other things, is that he is finally getting to play golf again, something he has not been able to do for years. He is not in any more pain.
Fr. ‘JP’ Moynihan was an awesome priest and a great friend!! He was my go to confidant when life was really difficult. There were truly fun times too, like when I moved to Boston, he called me one night and said ‘Stewie, Im coming to Boston’! I was sooo happy to hear and we met up for lunch, and a little post lunch cocktail at the Black Rose, and Irish establishment in Boston. His sermons were spot on and always touched on people’s lives. Im so sorry to see his passing. I bet Saint Peter is having a blast with him right now! Like he told me when my father was dying, ‘Heaven is paradise and Im sure you can do whatever you like there, even golfing’ Rest in peace friend!
I remember the first time I met Father. It was shortly after he took over as Chaplin at St James Mercy Hospital . He later baptized our two children at St Ignatius Church. He was a wonderful man and will truly be missed. Thoughts and prayers for his family. RIP Fr Jerry….Joanne and Patrick Conklin
In the summer of 2013 Father Moynihan accepted the invitation to say Mass each Sunday in the small community of Aurora, New York on the shore of Cayuga Lake. His booming voice and larger than life personality quickly endeared him to the parishioners of Good Shepherd Catholic Community and our many summer visitors. We were looking forward to his return to Aurora on Mother’s Day 2014 for another summer. As our God welcomes you, we thank you Father Moynihan, rest in peace.
Jerry’s loss will be felt by both of us. He was always ready for a good time and gave support to us throughout our married life. Our condolences and prayers are with Jerry’s family–may God strengthen you at this time of great loss.
Well done good and faithful servant…
May you rest in peace my friend.
Father Moynihan and my Uncle Jack Crowley came up to my father’s place on Keuka lake every Labor Day for years. He enjoyed his Manhattans and the day with all of us. We had some good discussions. I know you are with Jack now. Cindy Collins, Albany, NY

Many years ago, before my brother, Ron Hayes, moved to North Carolina, Father Moynihan was a good friend of his. Ronnie passed in Dec. 2012, and I am sure was there at the gate to greet Father home. He spoke very highly of him, and I am sure he would want me to give his condolences to the family, and also to send some prayers their way. God bless you all.

Our deepest condolences to the Moynihan Family. Father Moynihan administered many sacraments to three generations of our family during and after his service at St. Ignatius Parish in Hornell. He was dearly missed when he returned to Elmira. Your loss is felt and shared by many. He continues to be in our prayers, most especially during a celebration of his life at St. Ann’s in Hornell on Friday, April 11 at 7:00 PM. Sincerely, Nasca, Losecco, Pascarella, and Remchuk Families
