During the first four years of active service as a boatswain’s mate aboard the USS Niagara Falls he was stationed in both Alameda, CA, and Guam. His travels included Singapore, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Japan, Bali, Korea, and Australia.   He returned to the Navy as a Reservist.   He was a rig captain and top yard and stay operator for Cargo Afloat Rig Team 401. In this he specialized in transferring fuel, munitions, and stores, from one ship to another (UNREP) while underway.  He especially enjoyed participating in RIMPAC in Pearl Harbor, HI,  – The Rim of the Pacific – which is the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise. Nelson had a life-long love of comics, especially Marvel and Spiderman.  He also loved movies, music, and reading books.  He enjoyed traveling with family and friends, or even a day trip adventure. He enjoyed a good scotch and a good conversation. Above all, Nelson was a loving and devoted husband and father and son.  It was well known that nothing meant more to him than his family.  His family grew over the years with friends who became family.  He will always be remembered not only for his clever wit and humor, but also for his warmth, kindness, and character.  His kindness shined through his eyes and his laughter and smile lit up a room.  He will be greatly missed by a great many who loved him.  Thank you everyone for the overwhelming amount of love and support.  “What is grief, if not love persevering?”   Friends may call Friday (Oct 22nd) 4-7 PM at Vay-Schleich and Meeson, 1075 Long Pond Road. So many memories, so many adventures….or should I say misadventures? Who will be the ring leader now? Who will come up with the ideas that always seemed to hold the possibility of trouble and were ALWAYS fun. You were one of a kind and I will miss you so much. Rest well my friend!

It’s a very sad day when we lose a childhood friend. The memories I have are all happy ones and they will never be forgotten. The adventures were epic and a little bit scary, but I wouldn’t change anything. I’m so thankful we were all able to connect again within the last couple of years and that we were able to have one last adventure. I wish you peace….

Nelson was a true professional and a gentleman. He was always diligent, dedicated, and responsible in his performance at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). I remember the day he was hired and was pleased to meet him in the hallways over the past 29 years. He was always respectful and smiling. He will be missed by many. I extend my condolences to his wife and family. Capt Steven Loucks (USN Ret.), Past Deputy Director of LLE

Nelson was a beloved member of the UR/LLE community for 28 years, it is a big shock to lose him. He was a super important contributor to the Optical Manufacturing group (OMAN). As part of that Senior Manufacturing Engineer role, he provided essential support to the OMEGA EP laser facility – an extraordinarily powerful and productive science laser – in my area of the lab. He had so many people he connected with here at the lab, and many here knew him well, including me. Rest in peace Nelson- you were a great person and taken too soon from this world – and my sincere condolences to all family, friends, and co-workers. Sam

There are no words to express my deepest condolences to his family in the loss of your husband and father. Nelson was one-of-a-kind, and he will be forever missed at UR-LLE. Almost 28 years in OMAN – loyal, dedicated, honest, hardworking, witty, wise-ass, family man, patriot, and friend. So many stories, so many movie-reference zingers that went over my head, so many vent sessions, so many laughs and so much appreciation for a coworker that was a true friend. He always kept it real, and he will never be forgotten. Joker out, RIP, and God Bless! Our deepest sympathy and prayers. Peace and love – Amy, Ron and family

I am so very sad to hear of Nelson’s passing. He was always so much fun to be around and I have years of memories of his and my brother’s escapades at OMAN (with pictures to prove them). I pray that God brings you strength and comfort during this difficult time. May the day soon come when thoughts of Nelson bring a smile to you face instead of tears to your eyes. Sending love, Loretta Chrzan-Williams

I just heard of the loss of my long time "sweetie" Nel. I had the pleasure to see this young man grow up to be the caring and spiritual hero he was to his family and friends. I’m sorry to all of us he left behind. He made friends for life , from the family and friends from Stoneridge days to the brothers in the service . I know he will have a cup of tea ready and waiting for him as he enters Heaven as his Mother and Nonnie have been waiting for him. Boy, is he going to be busy. Till we meet again.

He was a big part of their family and I always thought how wonderful that was. I am shocked and saddened to hear of Nelson’s passing. I worked with him back in the 1990’s and had been back in touch during the past year,. Nelson was one of the most caring generous people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and his sense of humor always lit up the room. He was such a wonderful person and will be so greatly missed….
