Rochester: Peacefully, after a short illness, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at age 86. Survived by her loving husband, Gray of 64 years; son, Douglas G. Powell; daughter, Barbara (Frank) Farina; brothers, Joe, John and Richard; several nieces, nephews and cousins; several loving relatives and friends. Friends may call Tuesday 4-7 PM at Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home, 1075 Long Pond Road, Greece Chapel. Her Graveside Prayers will be held Wednesday 10:00 AM at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Lollypop Farm or Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester in her memory.
i grew up around the corner and have been friends with the powell family forever. mary was a fiesty lady that spoke her mind & loved to laugh. i will miss her.
I have known the Powell’s for 40 years. Mary treated me like her own Son. She was a gracious and sweet lady and I will miss her dearly.

I lived two doors down from the Powells on Oakwood Rd. for years. Actually I met the family when I was six years old. Looking at their beautifull home on the corner and interacting with Gray and Mary over them over the years speaks volumes about how great the neighborhood was to me and what a great example the parents put forth. Both parents were very patient with the youngsters in the neighborhood and particularly I always felt comfortable speaking with Mary on any topic. She was special. That, plus reading the Sunday comics (Prince Valiant) with Gray and Doug on their back porch as a youngster remains in my mind. Mary will never be forgotten.
I only met Mary twice, but Gray would come to the Clum-Jewell family reunions. May Mary rest in our Lord Jesus arms, and I pray for comfort to Gray and the children. Gray would speak of Mary with care. God bless, Mrs. Hugh Jewell
Mary was one very special lady, And to the Powell family, please except our sympathy and condolences, We have truly enjoyed our 17 years living next store to Mary and Gray, I have so many memories that will last forever, We all have. She was a great person and always asked about how everyone else was doing before worring about herself,opening the front door and calling Nick, I would come running, and said what, she would say Rick go away… There is just so much more I can say… the best years of my life, was living next door to such great neighbors as Mary and Gray, Mary will be missed forever, and may she rest in Peace, Love Rick and Monica, your neighbors always
My Aunt Mary was an inspiration to me. Her sparkling smile was always infectious; she loved to laugh and to talk. Loyal to and protective of those she loved, she seemed never afraid to speak for what she believed was right. I always felt a connection to her through her love of the north country, so much like her first home. At her core, she was a strong, courageous and caring woman; her memory will continue to inspire me.
My mother was born near Commerce, IA, raised in International Fall, MN, and worked for Boeing in Seattle during WW II. She loved spending time at her camp in the Adirondacks. I will miss her, she was a wonderful mother and my best friend.
Uncle Gray and family: I am so sorry to hear of Aunt Mary’s passing. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
