To Mary Lou’s family, Jim and I are in S. Carolina until early April. I just read this morning’s D&C on my computer and was shocked to see that my dear childhood friend, Mary Lou, had passed away. So many thoughts are running through my head. I think about all those summers at Honeoye Lake where Mary Lou and I won the 3-legged race (and 50 cents each) every 4th of July; how we played the creek or in Pennel’s barn; the times we camped out in that tiny trailer behind your grandmother’s cottage or shared the bed on the porch, listening to the crickets or rain on the roof. I remember around age 10, when Mary Lou stood on the swings and pumped ourselves high enough to reach out and touch the leaves on the willow tree–and then Mary Lou fell and broke her arm, returned to the lake with a cast on her arm and we just continued as though nothing had happened. I could go on and on with memories of Honeoye. Kathy and Billy: you remember, too. As Mary Lou and I grew older, we shared many good times as single girls. We drove to Newport, R.I., in my father’s 1958 Pontiac to pick my brother, Carl, when his Navy ship pulled into port there. She and I gabbed constantly in the car and forgot to watch the gas gauge until the car puttered and rolled to a stop on the bridge over the Hudson River. She, Carl and I shared a king-sized bed at the Newport Inn (I was in the middle as any good sister would be), drank beer and watched the 1960 Democratic Convention when John F. Kennedy was nominated to run for president. There were so many good times–so many adventures and visits to 112 Iceland Park. I will remember these things for Mary Lou–to keep her young and vital in my mind and heart. I miss being young with her, I miss our exploits, I miss her wonderful family. I will miss Mary Lou forever. She leaves a spot in my heart that no one else could ever fill. Jim and I extend our deepest sympathies to her children and grandchildren, her sister and brother, in-laws and other of her family and friends. We have lost a real gem. Rest in peace, dear Mary Lou. With our love, Lydia and Jim Garrity
