I am sorry to hear of Mark’s passing. As an engineer at Lightning, I was able to work with Mark on many projects. We also had lots of discussion about the travels we were looking forward to or had already done. He was a good friend and will be missed.
Mark- we will always cherish your friendship. RIP buddy! Till we see you again! Bill and Donna
Mark, Will never forget the great times together. High school, the Derby, Fourth of July parties @ your house, bowling on Tuesday night. RIP my brother! You will sadly missed.
I have so many wonderful memories from Swampy’s 4th of July parties, including the one time he was fishing with my dad and I and we ended UP reeling in an old boot. Swampy was a kind and loving person and will be dearly missed by those who knew him. My heart goes out to all of his children and grandchildren during this time and to the many people who were lucky enough to call him a friend.
Such a horrible thing to happen to one of the truly great guys in this world. Love and miss you buddy, you were a great friend and teammate. We’ll meet up again some day.
Angie, Lisa, Laura and extended family: Our hearts are filled with such sorrow as we are sure yours are. Mark was a great, great friend to Phil; a brother he never had!! Our memories of him will be cherished forever . . . . We so looked forward to our visits back home and breakfast with Mark and other friends. May your fond memories ease your broken hearts. I first met Mark when he began dating my sister Gail in 1975. I was 13 years old and looking back it’s hard to believe Mark was only 21. He seemed like such a man & such a leader to me. I admired Mark from the start, I couldn’t wait for him to come over to the house when he got out of work at Mixco and I loved watching him play softball with the Mixco team. Mark was a great outfielder. He could run down a flyball like a gazelle. Before his games he would teach me how to throw a curveball. Mark was the first adult who treated me like a man even though I was just a little useless shit. Mark was the first person to answer so many questions a 13 year old has. Everything from his tattoos to sports Mark schooled me. We’d watch the 3 stooges & Beverly Hillbillies and laugh our asses off. We had the same warped mindset for practical jokes and we were constantly scheming to see who could come up with the next prank. Mark had the greatest tricks from setting cups of water on doors to loosening legs on chairs. I think he ordained me as an official member of the pranksters club when I loaded a firecracker into Gail’s cigarette and it exploded just as she took a drag. As I rolled on the floor laughing Mark was picking burnt tobacco out of a furious Gail’s face (while smirking). I remember being scared she might break up with him so I immediately took full responsibility because I certainly didn’t want this to be the last time Mark came over. Before long I was sleeping at Marks apartment and going fishing with him. I remember one morning we woke up and he said “let’s go we have to get my new truck “. It was the first time I ever really saw somebody buy a brand new vehicle. It was a green pickup truck with sidesteps. I was the first to ride in it & it was the first time I ever smelled a new car. To this day whenever I smell a new car I think of that moment with Mark. Mark who was affectionately known as “Swampy” would introduce me to a whole cast of characters who all had nicknames. There was his brother Steve “Tiny” & guys like Mazz, BF, Bud etc. It took me years to figure out anybody’s real name. A few years later when Gail and Mark married I began helping him mow the lawn and paint apartments where he was superintendent at Bennington drive. I look back on it as my first job and Mark as my first supervisor… The pay was excellent… Genesee Beer & free worms from Joe’s Bait. I had the best job in the world and looked forward to every weekend! I remember driving all around the Lake Ontario area and Mark was always looking at the homes along Island Cottage dreaming of owning one someday. Although Mark always got the riding mower and I had to use the push mower he did reward me on my birthday. Although I can’t say how old I was to protect the innocent Mark let me drive the riding mower across the street to Romig’s Tavern for a birthday beer or 2 or 3. On the way back Mark rode in a wagon I towed behind. I guess this was my first DUI experience on a riding lawn mower and I had the best backseat driver in the world. When I got my real NYS drivers learners permit Mark tossed me the keys to his car and said “let’s go” and he made me drive all the way to the Adirondacks for camping. When I wanted to learn guitar Mark took me to the House of Guitars and helped me get my first guitar. Mark was the first person who ever let me shoot his guns and taught me gun safety. Mark was the first person to ever hand me a power tool and say “go for it”. Mark would go to Skate & Shoot with me and encouraged me to get a tryout in the OHL and when I did he drove me to Canada. When Mark & Gail moved into their first house on Milliner Street just a few blocks away from me it was the best. Mark & I painted his house & then Mark asked me to help him paint his neighbors house too, an old man who had nobody to help him. Again the pay was excellent! I remember sleeping over there and playing with my adorable niece Angela and watching Mark cuddle her. In 1981 when I went away to college Mark drove me to Cortland and helped me unload my luggage. All the way there he gave me advice on college and what to do. You would’ve thought he had a masters degree. As years went on I married & bought my first home just up the street from Mark & Gail on Brewerton Drive in Ogden. It was an awesome time as I’d get to show him the remodeling I was doing and my nieces would walk down to visit. It was around this time that I remember Mark asking me advice on a few remodeling things. I felt like it had all come full circle. As life goes we both spent the next 25 years raising our kids and didn’t get together nearly as much as we should have. I was able to attend a few of Marks legendary 4th of July picnics but not nearly as many as I wish I would have. I certainly wish Mark could’ve met my fiancé Tara. I know he would’ve been happy for us. I stopped by Mark’s Island Cottage home a few times in recent years to see the man I know had the most profound impact on who I am today. From being a father to being a friend Mark was my template. I am forever grateful for his love, guidance, friendship and brotherhood. Thank you Mark for so many great things. You’re 1 in a million. I Love You RIP Brother Love You Danny Prince
