Lucie R. Harrington, aged 82, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, in hospice at a Rochester, NY hospital. Née Lucie Vern Rader, she was born on June 7, 1942, in Olean, NY to Floyd Rader and Carrie “Dora” Austin.

Lucie was a knowledgeable lady whose schooling started in a one-room schoolhouse and concluded with her graduation from Eden High School in 1960. While in her forties, Lucie earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Alfred University. She later worked as a ward clerk at Jones Memorial (Wellsville, NY) and Holmes Regional (Melbourne, FL) hospitals before retiring to South Carolina.

Lucie instilled her avid love of birdwatching in her children and grandchildren, being able to identify many birds by sight and their calls. She also enjoyed spending time with family: thrift store shopping, celebrating special events with meals, and playing a variety of card and board games together. She leaves behind a legacy of favorite home-cooked meals, often made from home-grown produce.

Lucie is survived by her children, Garry Turnbull, Mary (Jim) Stuhr, Dorothy “Dot” (Gary) Houde, and James (Jessica) Gardner; brothers Eli S., Chip (Mary), and Melon Lou Rader; grandchildren Adam and Brian Turnbull, Jim (Marilu) Stuhr, Jr., Velvet Tesi, Robbie (Erin) Stuhr, Scott (Chrystal) Stuhr, John Stuhr, Beth Stewart, William and Andrew Houde, Katelyn (Wayne) Howell, James Gardner, Jr., and Jasmain and Daniel Gardner, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Floyd Raymond “Sonny” and Abraham Rader, and sisters Effie L. Newkirk and Betty Ann Joseph.

Lucie’s celebrations of life are planned for the summer of 2025. The first will be held at Lake Murray Evangelical Church in Chapin, SC at 1 pm on July 26th. Visitation hours are tentatively planned for a location in Wellsville, NY on July 28th or 29th. Internment will be held privately with family in Versailles, NY.
