Rochester: Passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010 at age 87. Predeceased by her wonderful mother, Cecelia T. Long; brothers, Richard & Howard Long. She is survived by her loving son, Douglas W. Simms; nieces and nephews; many dear friends. June joined the workforce as a teenage girl while still in high school, performed waitress type duties for over 4 decades, did years of banquet work at various downtown hotels, the Liederkranz Club and at Oak Hill Country Club. While in her late 20’s, she became a hardworking single mother to support her infant son, Doug. Forced to turn him over to the loving and experienced care of her mother and older brother Richard for upbringing, she continued his support until he was in college. Working hard while standing on her feet over these many years helped lead to her later leg problems. Due to health problems in the mid 1980’s, she had to make a career change. She took training courses and became a valued and trusted home health care aide. She excelled at this work and received two citations as employee of the month and was once employee of the year in 1988 from Quality Care. Selfless with her time, she provided car rides for her mother and older brother Richard for many years. She always enjoyed following baseball like her brothers and loved her three fox terrier dogs. June spent her last eight years in St. John’s Nursing Home confined to a wheelchair due to crippling rheumatoid arthritis of the leg joints, osteoporosis of the knee and muscle and hip problems. She made the most of a difficult situation and adapted to the life of living in a nursing home. She got involved in all sorts of crafts and activities there and became a champion Bingo player. June’s son, Doug would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of St. John’s Home (5th floor, Reservoir) for their outstanding love, care and support. Friends may call Thursday, 10 A.M.-11 A.M. at Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home, Greece Chapel, 1075 Long Pond Road. Her Funeral Service will be held, followed visitation at 11 A.M. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
