Passed May 3, 2015, born in Western Pennsylvania on May 1, 1921. Predeceased by parents, George and Anna, Rachel (wife and best friend for more than fifty years), and son, Timothy. Survived by son Jon, daughter-in-law, Cindy in Minnesota, five grandchildren, Jamie in Iowa, Lindsey in Maryland, Justin in Minnesota, Crystal and Jeffrey in Michigan, two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Betty Sue in Iowa, sister, Evelyn in South Carolina and nephews and nieces throughout the south. Supported and encouraged by Rachel, John earned college degrees from Carnegie Institute of Technology, Clemson College, University of Pittsburgh, and finally his doctorate from University of Detroit. Concurrently, nearly thirty years were spent in industry: US Steel, Ford Motor Company, local and international consulting. John was a veteran of World War II, having been discharged from the US Army Signal Corps as a Second Lieutenant. In the US Army Signal Corps Reserve, he earned the rank of Captain. A strong proponent for quality (of life, product, process) and methods for achieving same. He was president of the American Society for Quality and was named Honorary Member. This high honor was also bestowed upon him by the Canadian Society for Quality, the Philippine Society for Quality Control, and the Czech Society for Quality and the International Academy for Quality. An achievement in which he took great pride was serving as the Executive Director of the Center for Quality and Applied Statistics at Rochester Institute of Technology, which was later given his name. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m., at the Allen Chapel in the Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Interfaith Center (on the RIT campus), 40 Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, NY 14623. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be sent to the John D. and Rachel E.
