Joan M. Doty

Doty, Joan M. Rochester: passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 22, 2017 at age 65, due to complications of heart failure. Joan was born April 16, 1952 in Hornell, NY to Francis and Colleen DiVincenzo. A graduate of Hornell High School in 1970, she went on to obtain a bachelor of science in music education from Nazareth in 1974. Joan loved music and had a beautiful voice, she sang at her sister’s wedding and was also a vocal music teacher. In 1981, Joan began an almost 30 year career caring and advocating for the needs of the developmentally disabled. She was an aide and director in residences including Savona and Campbell before becoming a program coordinator for the Finger Lakes DDSO where she retired in 2007. In 1975 Joan’s life was changed forever when her only child was born. Her daughter, Jennifer, was her greatest achievement and the love of her life. It was important to Joan that her daughter be exposed to music so the two of them were often heard “singing” conversations to one another. Joan also started taking Jenny to Broadway musicals at a very young age, a cherished event that continued until her passing. Joan touched the lives of everyone who met her and had a most unique sense of humor. She loved the earth, all its creatures and everything green and growing. She had beautiful and distinctive gardens around her home, was an excellent cook, and an avid Amazon shopper. She was thoughtful, friendly, eccentric, highly intelligent, generous, and an overall lovely person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer (Joe) Ganz, her three sisters Mary K (Richard) Carafice, Peggy DiVincenzo, and Angela DiVincenzo, her brother John (Sara Linehan) DiVincenzo, her cousins Jane Scura and Regina (Gary) Merz, her three nephews Alex DeJulio, Dennis Lynch-Flohr, and Joey Lynch-Flohr and her two nieces Molly DiVincenzo and Frankie DiVincenzo. She is predeceased by her parents Francis and Colleen DiVincenzo, her aunt and uncle Dolores and Louis Scura, her aunt Julia Mastrangelo and her nephew Daniel DeJulio. Joan felt a responsibility to preserve the earth for future generations and had a green burial with her immediate family. A celebration of life will be held at her home on Saturday, September 2, 2017 1-5 PM. where all of her friends and family can share remembrances.
