Jamie Lyn Heard-Salatino

Greece:  Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at age 39 after a courageous lifelong health struggle.  She is survived by her devoted parents, Stephen and Lynore Heard; loving daughter, Gianna; brother, Kevin (Erin) Heard; boyfriend, Jim Okeen; uncles, Mark (Mary) Heard and Peter (Susan) Heard; niece and nephews, Grady, Aurora and Jonah; cousins; many dear friends.

Jamie earned her Master’s degree from the University of Rochester and spent her days sharing her passion for life and learning with others as a school counselor for the Rochester City School District.    She was a wonderful cook and shared her love of food and recipes with those near and far.  Her most proud achievement was parenting her loving daughter.  Throughout her struggles Jamie maintained a positive attitude, inspiring anyone with whom she came into contact to live their best life.  Her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her, but her influence will live on.

Jamie’s visitation will be held Tuesday, April 27th 4-6 PM at Vay-Schleich & Meeson 1075 Long Pond Road.  At 6:00 there will be a short prayer for close family and friends.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Golisano Children’s Hospital in her memory.  For more information and to sign her online guestbook, visit www.meesonfamily.com

Condolences to all the family. A bright light has gone out of this world. I worked with Jamie at SWW for nearly 10 years. She was strong, brave, positive, and always honest. Although her life was cut short, she leaves behind literally hundreds of kids who will never forget her. She helped them believe in themselves, with her unique mixture of wisdom, kindness, and a kick in the pants when necessary. A passionate, complicated person, she never did anything without giving it her all. It gave me great pleasure to see her grow into a strong fulfilled woman with many interests and friends. If anyone ever lived the spirit behind the maxim "Carpe diem", it was Jamie. I will miss her.

My heart goes out to Jamie’s family. She was a bright light. Jamie and I worked together at School Without Walls and became friends. When I would interview prospective ESOL students, I would usually mention Jamie as a reason to come to our school. She truly believed in each student and was a champion and a life changer for many, many teenagers. She lit the way for others and gave so much of herself in everything she did. I will miss her wisdom quotes, hugs, her regular check ins— even after she left SWW, her recipes and love of life. I will feel her “glow” for a long time. We ate at Lento’s tonight and gave her a toast and I will be cooking her recipes this week.

She was a beacon in SWW to all the students and most of yeas. She is with God now and she is at peace and we shall keep her memory alive through the good deeds and goals she inspired in us.Jaime will forever be in our hearts. Fly high angel we will be ok.

  22. Pat Moran on April 25, 2021 at 10:01 pm

Jamie was one of my school counselor mentees what now seems like eons ago. I so enjoyed working with her. A school counselor thinks of her students as "her kids." She was a positive influence on so many students. Know that she left her mark on the world, not only through Gianna, but also on all those young lives she touched at SWW. She was always open about her health issues and knew that her life would be shorter than most people’s, but 39 is way too short for such an impactful person. This is sad news indeed.

Lyn and Steve, What a strong, self reliant daughter you raised. How fortunate were the students she guided and counseled the past years. May all the beautiful memories you shared with her through the years ease the pain your aching hearts feel now. You have your own angel. God bless you. Love, Sandy and Bob Steinle

  28. Mariana Barry on April 26, 2021 at 2:20 am

Jamie-you were a bright light at SWW that believed in all of your students. You pushed them, supported them and never let them give up on themselves. You loved to see the students shine and succeed. You talked about your daughter so often-she was the gift you wanted more than anything. You loved how much she shared your love of cooking. You will be missed by so many but I hope your family knows how many lives you touched, how many dreams you helped to make come true. Your time here was too short but you made a difference to so many.

My condolences to the family and friends of Jamie. I had the pleasure of meeting Jamie this year as she worked in my school building, Dr. Walter Cooper Academy. Foe the short time that I’ve known Jamie I could tell that she had a passion for helping others, along with cooking. Her daughter was the light of life. She maybe gone physically but she made an impact with hundreds of students and staff that will last a lifetime. RIP Jamie!

I was Jamie’s supervising principal at School Without Walls until 2010, when I retired. My sincere condolences go to her family and friends. She was an outstanding counsellor and human being. I will always remember Jamie’s deep concern for our students at SWW. She helped many of them deal with their interpersonal issues and often connected them to local agencies for specialized help. Although I will be unable to attend visiting hours, I will be there in spirit. Such a loss!

  34. Carolyn Haynes on April 26, 2021 at 1:44 pm

Praying for the family Jamie was always helpful with the students at SWW and she was also helpful to me when I was going there and got pregnant with both of my kids and she told me it’s best to go to night school since I had to kids but I was still going to walk across stage with my school and I did in 2012. I’m really going to miss Jamie

I love Jamie Salatino. Her love of life and for the students of SWW shined through each and every day. She poured life and hope into students and staff, worked tirelessly to help students with the college admissions process, edited essay after essay, searched the community for people to serve on Sr. Exit interview committees, arranged and chaperoned countless college visits, listened patiently, counseled wisely, sang while she worked, and shared her amazing homemade food. She was a light and a part of the foundation of SWW. Jamie loved life and lived everyday to its fullest and unafraid. To her former students- strive to live as Jamie did…seize the day and don’t let go until day is done. Idonia Owens, SWW Principal from 2010-2017, and blessed to call Jamie my friend

I am a teacher who only knew Jamie a short while. I was with a class just the other day and probably enjoyed one of her final lessons. She made the point to the children of finding work they love and she did this with passion. I will not forget it and will carry on her message whenever and wherever I can. It is remarkable to learn about her through the words found here from friends and co-workers. I wish everyone peace and joy in their memories of such a fine person.

Jamie was a great counselor, I remember that I used to knock on her door and ask for college suggestions and course work-related questions. She is always energetic and passionate about giving out opinions, it helped a lot during my college years. Really appreciated the help and I felt very lucky and fortunate enough to be part of the SWW student. It was a heartbreaking moment when I heard dear Jamie has left us. I know that it will be a difficult moment for every one of us, we will stay strong and keep going. You will stay alive in our minds forever. My biggest condolences to the family….

This was such a shock. Jamie was a friend from middle school, high school and Mother of Sorrows. The few times we crossed paths since high school, it was easy to pick up with her like no time had passed. It was a great time catching up and reminiscing. She absolutely beamed when talking about Gianna. I will always remember her for her energy, joy and sense of humor. She wanted the absolute best for EVERYONE she came across, which is only one of the qualities that made her such a beloved high school guidance counselor. Best wishes to all those in her most recent close circle, and especially her family. May a piece of Jamie’s spirit live on in all of us to keep her memory alive.
