Tuesday, December 26, 2006. Survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Pearl; son, William(Charleen)Mathis; daughters, Gail Dodd, Carol(Charles)Kalmbacher; 4 wonderful grandchildren, Kristi(William)Morshead, Kira Dodd, Kristin Mathis & Michael Mathis; 3 great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Jack & Ella Morshead; sisters-in-law, Ruby Sullivan & Jane Herring; several nieces,nephews and dear friends. Herb was a maintenance engineer with 41 years of service at Eastman Kodak. He was a avid gardener and craftsman. Herb served 5 years in World War II in the Army Surgical Division as a Surgical Technician; always loving life. Friends may call Friday 3-7PM at the Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home, 1075 Long Pond Rd. His Graveside Service will be held Saturday, 10:30AM at Falls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John Knox Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 3232 Ridge Road West, Rochester, NY 14626 or Lifetime Care Hospice in his memory.
Dear Aunt Pearl, Carol, Gail, and Bill, Ken and I feel honored and priviledged to have known Uncle Herb and we are glad we had the opportunity to get to know you all, even though the circumstances could have been better. When we would call to give a report of Dad’s daily condition, Uncle Herb would often make us feel better by his observations, caring and humor. Two great guys left us too suddenly but we have our wonderful memories of them. Love to you all and keep in touch. Alma & Ken
My memories of Uncle Herb are many. Even though I have not seen him lately. I use to see his red truck driving around Greece as I was doing my running. I would run into him and Aunt Pearl at the CVS on Long Pond Road frequently. I think of the doll house that he made that was at the house. It was so beautiful and I always wanted to play with it. (But I didn’t dare touch it, it was too beautiful) I remember them coming out to Kendall to see us on numerous occassions. He was a wonderful man. Dad I just wanted to thank you for showing me what hard work and determination could do. Your strength and creativity affected a lot of people. You’re my hero and love you so much. I miss your presence but I feel your strength!
