Helen is survived by her sister-in-law Peggy Verschelden from St. Mary’s, Kansas, many nieces and nephews, including Carolann Hassett and Sandy Horr and by many dear friends.
Helen and Joe were founding members of Our Lady of Mercy Parish. Because of her concern for the less fortunate, she volunteered for many years on the Social Ministry Committee at Mercy. She loved helping at St. Martin’s Place and St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality. She was a “Money Counter” for most of her years at Mercy. Helen also volunteered for FISH (Friends in Service Here). When Our Lady of Mercy closed, Helen and Joe chose St. Charles Borromeo Church, where they felt warmly welcomed.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mill Landing-Assisted Living for their loving care of Helen during the past 5 years.
Friends may call Friday (Sept 16th) 4-7 PM at Vay-Schleich and Meeson, 1075 Long Pond Road. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday (Sept 17th) 11:30 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf at 500 Maiden Lane, 14616 or St. Charles Borromeo Church in her memory.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Your Mother was so loved by all. We worked together on many ministries at Mercy and St. Charles. I am going to be out of town for her wake and funeral, for which I am also very sorry. Kathy Hunt
So many memories of our friendship. Started when we built our house next door in 1961. Our families were always there for each other. We had a pool at which we spent time together until our husbands came home from work and then we’d run to get dinner ready. We had 5 couples that traveled together for many trips, now you are with them and I miss you all. Love and Sympathy to your family. Peg Paradise
Please know how sorry I am to learn of the loss of your beloved mom. My memories go back to the early 1950s and even as a young girl your mom’s smile always stuck with me. She is lighting up the heavens now and dancing with your dad. Linda Merk (former babysitter)
Beautiful Helen-you are with your beloved Joe now. We’ll never forget how you both welcomed with open arms a young couple just moving into their first house. So many wonderful, fun memories! Love, Duane and Loretta Kirk
