Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute

Irondequoit: Sunday, March 25, 2012, at age 95. In 1916 on September 9, was born a chap named Ellsworth Stein. Ellsworth grew up in Rochester town, and became a tool and die maker of great renown. As a Boy Scout and a leader for 60 years or more, he taught many a lad to appreciate the great outdoors. An Officer in World War II was he, and retired from Kodak and the Military. With his parents and later alone, he lived eighty years on Bonesteel Street, til one day he fell in his home. He moved to St. Ann’s Heritage where the care is real fine and the people there really liked Ellsworth Stein. A member of Genesee Valley Hiking Club since 1945, he’s done a lot to keep GVHC alive. Both local and afar on water and land, he’s led many a trip, and in GVHC and local clubs has formed many a close friendship. A bit gruff at times, most say he had a heart of gold, though when nesessary, his friends he’s been known to scold. Good advice he was always ready to provide, take it or leave it you could decide. Known for his ability to get things done and for accomplishing tasks once he’d begun. His friends think a lot of him that’s plain to see and he’s an important part of GVHC History. So three cheers for Ellsworth Stein, he was quite a guy; he’s done lots for others to that we all certify. We cherish the good times he’s shared with us all and helped us remember ‘life can be a ball!’Friends may call Wednesday (March 28th) 4 7 PM at Vay Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home, 1075 Long Pond Road, Greece Chapel. His Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held Thursday 10:00 AM at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Finger Lakes Trail Conference or Nature Conservancy in his memory.

El Stein was my scoutmaster in the very late 40’s and early 50’s and had a significant influence on my interests and thinking today at age 75. I remember him then just as he is remembered in his wonderfully written obit. Wherever he may be, he lives in my heart.

Ellsworth was my father’s cousin. He was always interested in the family and came to many family events. We will miss him but know that he is at peace now and on his final journey. Thanks to his many friends in Rochester for caring about him. I especially want to thank Bruce Butler for his support during the times when he needed it most. Having known Ellsworth for over 20 years, many of us in the hiking club thought of him as our ‘elder statesman.’ We just assumed he’d go on & on – certainly, to his centennial year. His amusing license plate, ‘MR. 1916’ left no doubt as to his birth date! He was such a wonderful person & did many anonymous ‘acts of kindness’ for people over the years. Truly, a member of ‘the Greatest Generation.’ Cynthia Howk, secretary, Genesee Valley Hiking Club

I worked with Ellsworth in Tool Inspection @ Kodak back in the 60’s/70’s. He taught me a lot, both on job requirements and on living your life. It was a pleasure to know him.
