Ed is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Shirley (Ketchum), his children Kathryn Butler (David) of Rockville, MD, Stephen (Barbara) of Annapolis, MD, Daniel (Lisa) of Lynchburg, VA, and David (Patricia) of Webster, NY, grandchildren Kristen Talcott (Corey), Brendan Butler, Jeffrey Geier, Adam Geier, Brian Ross (Lauren), Christopher Geier, Zachary Geier, Timothy Geier (Haley), Kaitlin Bradley (Nate) and Andrew Geier, and great-grandchildren Oliver and Emily Talcott.
Ed was pre-deceased by his brother John “Jack” Geier and sister Doris “Jill” Finegan.
After graduating from West High School in 1949 and earning an associate’s degree from RIT, Ed was drafted during the Korean War and served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954. Eighteen months after meeting on a blind date, Ed and Shirley were married on December 26, 1953 while on leave. The couple then drove cross-country to New Mexico for Ed to serve at the White Sands Proving Grounds in Las Cruces, NM until his honorable discharge in November 1954.
Upon his discharge from the Army, Ed returned to Rochester to finish his schooling and start his family. It was a proud moment for his young family when he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester.
Ed began his career at Rochester Products in 1950 before being drafted, and then, after his discharge, moved on to a successful career at Kodak in engineering and research before retiring in 1986 after 31 years. He then worked for several years at Lehigh Design before retiring for good.
Music was very important to Ed. He enjoyed singing into his 90’s. He sang in church choirs at Greece United Methodist Church and then at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He also sang for many years in the Greece Choral Society, Greece Notes choir, and in the Village at Unity chorus.
Ed was Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack 173 while his sons were in Cub Scouts, was a fencing team competitor and cross-country runner, enjoyed bowling, tennis, and cross-country skiing, was a skilled woodworker, and brought his enjoyment of photography into his family. He and Shirley enjoyed traveling, including researching family genealogy records at court houses and cemeteries. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and traveling with their families. They especially enjoyed bringing the entire family together at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia over 11 memorable summers filled with fun times and laughter.
Visitation will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 4115 Dewey Ave, Rochester on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm followed immediately by a funeral service. A reception following the service will be held at Aldersgate. Interment will take place at a later date.
So sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. I have so many fond memories from my days on Yarkerdale with the entire family. Our sincere condolences.
