Greece: Wednesday, July 2, 2008. Predeceased by her husband John E. Kowalewski; brother, Leslie K. Stallman. Survived by her son, John (Brenda) Kowalewski; daughter, Nancy Kowalewski; brother, Robert D. (Anne) Stallman; grandchildren, Michaela and William Kowalewski; several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was an incredible mother, wife and friend. She loved to shop, quilt, play cards and was always smiling. Family and Friends may call Sunday 4-7 PM at the Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home 1075 Long Pond Road. Her Funeral Service will be held Monday 9:30 AM in the Chapel of the Funeral Home. Private Interment, White Haven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in her memory.
Dear Nancy and John, I am sorry to hear of your mom’s death. She certainly was a very special person, and I was always glad to see her, either at school or in the community. She was so supportive of the both of you, and, of course, did a wonderful job of bringing you up to be the fine people you are. Nancy, I’ll always remember you as one of my favorite ‘kids’ in the class I worked with at Athena, and hope that you are doing well. All my best. Carol Coons.
Dorothy – I went to John Marshall with you. We always visited each others homes when we were young/teenagers – yours on Bonesteel and mine on Johnson Rd. I ran into you a few years ago at Crescent Beach at lunch time – so glad I did. My prayers are with your family.
I worked with your mom many years ago at Sibley’s/ Kaufmann’s. She was a lovely lady and always so lively!!
To the family of Dorothy Kowalewski: I was very surprised to receive an e-mail today from our mutual friend, Rita Wechsler (in Sarasota) informing me of Dorothy’s unexpected death. She wrote that her sister, Joyce Gilzow had just had lunch with Dorothy on Monday. I was so shocked and saddened as I am sure all of you must have been as well. Dot and I first met at the NY State Employment Office in the summer of 1950 and have been friends ever since, sharing in good times and sad times. We had a bridge lunch foursome, 3 D’s and an A, (Dot K., Dot Perkins, Dorothy Crumb, and Arline Spinell). Even after some of us left the State, retired, or whatever, we continued the bridge lunch get togethers for birthdays three times a year for many years. Dot and I kept in touch by mail and/or phone calls several times a year and whenever I was in Rochester, we got together for lunch, or breakfast, depending on my hectic schedule. When last we spoke, she was looking to seeing John and Brenda, and she was giving me an update on the latest home remodeling project. I could just see her smile over the phone! Words seem so inadequate at a time like this, but we did want to express our warmest and kindest thoughts to the whole family. Dorothy was truly a very special friend. What a beautiful smile Dorothy had! I was always pleased to have her assigned to the home store when I managed it at Kaufmanns-GreeceRidge, she treated every customer as if they were her friend. I was looking forward to running into her at Cornhill Arts festival like I have for so many years, so next Sunday I’ll smile and think of her when I see any quilts.
