3/18/45 – 07/03/26.

Rochester: passed away peacefully at Journey Home Hospice on Friday, July 3rd, 2026 at age 81. He was born in Buffalo, NY to Calvin and Elizabeth Viele. 

Dennis is survived by his wife of 59 years, Noreen; children, Anita (Steven) Hodge, Matthew (Kriste) Viele; grandchildren, Brittany (Edward) Tutovic, Marissa Viele, Gloria Hodge; great-granddaughter, Elianna Tutovic; brother, Calvin Viele; sister-in-law, Ellen Viele; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.  

Dennis served as an Army Medic in Germany after which he was employed at Eastman Kodak Company where he worked as a chemist for many years. He was a past Grand Knight of Columbus, Council #3892, and a dedicated Secular Franciscan. Dennis was a long-time parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church where he facilitated Bible study for 15 years. 

We thank the nurses and volunteers at Journey Home who made Dennis’ final days peaceful. 

Friends may call Friday (July 17th) 4 -7 PM at Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral home, 1075 Long Pond Road. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday (July 18th) at 11:30 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 3003 Dewey Avenue. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Journey Home Hospice in his memory.

    To Dennis’s family who loved him so much–
    Dennis and I were in Formation together for 3 years before our Profession into the Secular Franciscan Order.
    We also worked together in future Formation classes as Dennis led three women into our beloved Fraternity.
    He became a dear friend who always offered any kind of needed assistance and was a most gentle, kind and
    generous friend. I loved his laugh and good nature. He had a true Franciscan spirit and was an example of
    devotion to His Lord, Jesus Christ and to Noreen and family. I will miss him.

    Sorry to hear of Dennis’s passing. He was my first boss at EK in B18. Great guy to work for – always used that experience while at Kodak.

    Dennis and I worked together for several years in B&W Paper at Kodak. Always a helpful mentor and advocate for Health, Safety and Environment. Anita was our first babysitter for our girls on Dorothy Ave. 40 yrs ago. I smile thinking of Dennis. My condolences to the family he loved so much.

    I worked with Dennis for several years on Safety for MRE in the 90’s. Wonderful person and devoted Catholic.
