Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute
Greece, NY—David Calvin Harrington, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, was called home by his loving Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 9, 2021. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; sons Jim (Joanne), Matt (Rachel), and Chris (Alissa); and grandchildren Mara, Cecelia, Joshua, Josie, Jonathan, Elliot, Laurel, and Jasper. David was born to Betty Jo (Cummings) and James Calvin Harrington on March 29, 1949, in Oakland, California and grew up in nearby Hayward. David and Nancy met while attending Sunset High School. After David graduated from Occidental College, they married in June 1971. The newlyweds moved to Illinois for David to pursue his PhD in analytical chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Eastman Kodak Company recruited David while he was in graduate school, and the couple moved to Rochester, NY after graduation. David wore many hats in his 34-year career at Kodak, including time spent in research labs, manufacturing, organizational quality, and overseas assignments. The entire family spent an exciting year in Xiamen, China during 1987-88 in support of one of these assignments. The last half of his career was focused in Entertainment Imaging (motion pictures), where he retired in 2009 in the role of Quality Director & Strategy Planning for the business unit. David was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church, where he gave generously of his many talents, including serving on the Council, contributing to countless special projects, teaching Bible classes, and heading up a substantial remodeling project. He was a man of deep faith whose relationship with Jesus Christ was the guiding light of his life. David had the blessed opportunity to share his faith and talents through multiple mission trips, including memorable times in Costa Rica and Peru. Hope Church became the center of many important friendships in the family’s lives, including the long-standing Thanksgiving tradition celebrating with the “Turkey Twelve.” When not working or serving, David enjoyed playing golf, bocce, Euchre, and 500, as well as travelling, grilling, watching sports and cooking competition shows, using Excel spreadsheets, listening to classical music, and reading science-fiction and action novels. In his retirement, he joined the Recorder Society of Rochester, perfected his yard work, grew dahlias, and, most importantly, enjoyed spending more time with his friends and family. David and Nancy raised all three sons in Greece, NY. David lit up when he was around his family. With the birth of each successive grandchild, a little more of the silly, mischievous, and affectionate grandfather David came to the surface. Playing games, visiting museums, taking photographs and many other moments brought such joy to David and the eight grandchildren. David’s own words summed up why he will be missed by so many: “I have been blessed with a wonderful life, a loving and understanding wife, three remarkable sons and their wives, and eight beautiful grandchildren. Most of all, I have a loving Savior, Jesus Christ, Who has called me home.” Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 16th at Vay-Schleich & Meeson 1075 Long Pond Rd. A celebration of his life will be held at Hope Church, 1301 Vintage Lane, Greece, on Saturday, July 17 at 10 a.m. Donations in his memory can be made to Hope Church Memorial Fund or The Strong National Museum of Play.
