Scottsville: Suddenly Friday, May 15, 2020. Predeceased by his parents, James Vincent Castronovo, Alice and Kenneth Young. Survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Sharon Castronovo; his children, Nicole and Justin Castronovo; his siblings, Gerard (Sita) Castronovo, James (Denise) Castronovo and Linda Castronovo; in-laws, Don (Eudene) Benz, Steven (Betsy) Benz; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and many friends. Peter was devoted to his family and cherished his many friends. Peter was the chair of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He enjoyed coaching softball, baseball and hockey. Peter was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors.

In additional to being a dedicated husband and father, Peter was a key Senior Sanitarian at the University of Rochester. He was known as an expert in food science and varmint control. When there was an issue of concern with food safety at the Local or National level the media immediately consulted Peter for his opinion, which he would be found expressing on television, radio or in print. As the recognized local food science expert, Perter conducted classes for individuals involved in the food preparation industry so they could earn the certifications necessary to practice their trade.
Peter was my nephew, above everyone else Peter took the most interest in keeping the Famigghia Castronovo together. To say Peter will be missed, is an understatement.
A good man. Your smile and laughter will be missed. Many great memories made through Cal-Mum baseball. We will definitely cherish those moments with you. Our thoughts and love go out to your family.

Peter was always there to help guide me through issues with dining centers and general campus problems. He played a key role with the Noro virus 2016 and again with COVID 19. His insight, knowledge and calm demeaner were just a few of his attributes that I have relied on for 20 years. I will miss you my friend.
I enjoyed my conversations with Pete when I worked at the Health Dept. He had already left the County by the time I started, but we still had occasion to talk from time to time over the years because of his work at UR, and he was still engaged in sanitarian gatherings. My condolences to the family.

Our heartfelt condolences to Sharon, Nicole and Justin. Peter was a great guy who loved his family so very much. I have fond memories of our conversations at the annual Castronovo picnic. He will be missed by many. Our thoughts, prayers and hugs to all.
Pete was always nothing but positive and supportive of Stephen on the ice, even when Stephen made the biggest bonehead moves!! Sharon, Justin & Nicole, he was a giant; a super guy! My sincerest sympathies!!
I am truly sadden by the loss of Pete. I’ve know Pete for over 20 years while working at The U of R. Pete was a joy to be around and he will be truly missed. May his family find comfort in their time of grieving.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I always looked forward to inspecting the facilities at U of R and the chance to work with Pete for the day. I’ll miss him.
It has been many years since Pete and I were roommates in college. I will always remember his sense of humor and wit, and his loyalty to his friends. We sure had some great times and I wish that we could have kept in touch. Pete – say “hi” to Joe (another deceased college roommate and friend). My sincere sympathies to his family.

We were raised as “cousins” with your Mom and Dad being my godparents, but we became brothers over time. So saddened to hear this news. I worked with Pete for many years at UR and you could always count on him to give his expert advice to help make sure our student activities were safe and successful. He truly cared about each member of the community and gave 110%.

I just heard and was shocked. Peter was a great collaborator over the years with me and the NYS Integrated Pest Management Program of Cornell University. And a good friend. It was less than a month ago that he participated in my virtual retirement party!

Although I didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Peter, in the short time that I spent working with you and hearing you speak of him, I could tell you had a very loving relationship and that he was a wonderful man. We lived in Rochester for the first 9 years of my life and I was blessed to have spent many quality hours with Pete as we grew up together. As I think back, our favorite times together included riding to the “green store” to buy candy, ice cream cones at the lake, eating berries from the Mulberry tree in his backyard and swimming in his pool. Unfortunately, we moved and we kind of lost track as we pursued our careers over the years. I am so thankful that we were able to reconnect and Peper and I are so grateful that you and Peter stopped to visit us at our home a couple of years ago as y’all were passing through Virginia. We will always cherish the memory!
Peter was very influential in my early life and I loved him very much. He will be missed but forever in my memory. Peper and I pray that the Lord will bless and comfort you with peace and tranquility as you adjust to your new lives.

So very sad to hear this news. Had the pleasure of working with Peter in the 70s when he was at the Monroe County Health Department and continued when he was at the U of R. I really respected his knowledge and dedication to public health. We also played golf together on several occasions. So very sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

I was so very very sorry to hear of Pete passing. I have known Pete for over 30 years, he was a gentleman and one of the “good guys”. I would see him on Campus from over the years and we would share some stories about mutual interests that we both had in the outdoors and hunting. The most recent of which was a Moose Hunt that he went on, and told me about I enjoyed it very much. Little did I know that it would be the last time I spoke to him. I feel so bad for the family my heart goes out to you and to all of his friends he was a fine gentleman a really good guy and I’m going to miss seeing him. Pete was one of the people one could talk honestly with, you knew you could trust him, he was that kind of fellow. I was furloughed from the University early in March and had not heard about Pete passing until recently. God bless the family and his friends Pete will be missed, I’m certain by all of you, and I will miss seeing him also.
