Guestbook

  1. Dear Karla and Family,
You have my sincere sympathy at this difficult time. Jake’s passing makes me think back to the mid 60’s when we first met as we built our first home and became your neighbors. Remember Reeders, Dickinsons, Fords, Teerlinks, Drexlers, Happs then Bennetts; all fine neighbors; oh how time has changed things.
I remember Jake’s great garden every summer. I’d see him at times at Kodak’s Elmgrove Works – always cheerful at work and at home.
Fond memories – I could write a book about the old neighborhood. Then Pat and I and the kids left in 1988 to Mill Run until 2004 when we came back to the Preston homestead and built at the farm. During all this time you folks made sure we stayed connected by walking over to chat or just a friendly wave. It meant so much.
How about those no longer available windows for my shed? One look at them by Jake and presto! He had four of them made for us in no time. And most recently, the hood ornament for my tractor – now a treasure made by the master’s hand, Jake himself! Never would he accept money in payment – ‘Just give Karla some tomatoes,’ he’d say.
Dear friends, that offer still stands. When the tomatoes come, you help yourself. Gosh I’m going to miss Jake. His humor always caught me off guard and then we’d both stand and laugh.
On behalf of my late wife Pat and myself, rest easy old friend and neighbor. There will never be another Jake Jaufmann. My week has been saddened and my life diminished by his passing.
I can picture ole’ Jake up there in heaven now, standing in the grandest wood shop imaginable, preparing to make more of his trademark wooden cutting boards stamped, ‘HAND CRAFTED BY JAKOB JAUFMANN.’

We are so very sorry to learn of Jake’s passing.
We have many fond memories of the Jaufmanns and the many baseball games in the side lot of our house.
Although we haven’t seen each other in years we have thought of you all often.
Mom and us Dickinson girls would like to send you are sincere sympathy.
    God Bless,
    Dawn Dickinson Nelson

  3. Errol & family,

Our condolences for the loss of your father. As you grieve know that we are remembering you and honoring his memory.

  4. Errol & Family: So sadden to learn of the passing of your father.

I recall fondly the many times he journeyed down to Binghamton or followed the team on some road games to cheer on the Colonials.

He was a proud Dad, always there for you and I am certain to his extended family as well.

While times like these are sad I am certain he left all his family with many fond memories.

    Best Wishes – Tim Schum

  5. Errol–I’m sorry to learn about your dad’s passing. I’ll always remember the SUNY-B soccer games with Mr. Jaufmann, Mr. Ginther, and Mr. Berardicurti cheering, cajoling, and egging us on. Missing those days for sure! Be well.

  6. There was a bond that united this family which started well before I was born. They were all refugees from WW2 Ukraine during the worst of times, and insurmountable challenges was the bond that kept them all together as they eventually migrated and dispersed to safer places around the globe.

The Rochester NY area clan was where Onkel Jakob landed and started his new life as a family man and solid citizen in the land of opportunity. I was a kid, and he was one of many ‘Onkels’ which were available at numerous family gatherings that punctuated family events, holidays, and family rites of passage.

Sadly, as we watch this generation pass, we are reminded that memories will sustain us, and that all of them are an inspiration to us demonstrating that strength and will come out of adversity and life is what we make of it.

    Farewell Onkel Jakob

  7. When Jakob, karla, and Josef first came to Rochester they lived in an apartment on Charlotte St. It was in my grandparents home. I remember my Grandfather driving Karla and Jakob to the hospital for Patty’s birth.
They were such hard workers, no wonder they made this their ‘Land of opportunity’ Through the years, and after my grandparents death, we grew apart, but the years cannot erase Karla’s wide smile and Jakob’s self-effacing grin. May his spirit soar.
