Evelyn Rose Hessler was born on December 26, 1926 in Rochester, N.Y. and passed away on April 2, 2020 in Greece, N.Y.

Evelyn graduated from Irondequoit High School in 1944 and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1948.  She took graduate level courses in economics at Stanford University in 1963.  Her first job was with Commercial Controls in Rochester, NY.  She was employed by the US Department of State from 1957 to 1966.  During those years she held postings in Naples, Italy and Sao Paolo, Brazil. After leaving the State Department she worked at the US Department of Commerce in Washington, DC until her retirement in 1978.

She spent her retirement years at her beloved Hessler family property, “Far View,” on Keuka Lake where she enjoyed sailing, watercolor painting, spending time outdoors, as well as doing genealogical research.   Evelyn also had a keen interest in history, world affairs and national politics.  She will be remembered for her sharp intellect and single-mindedness.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, George and Leata Hessler, and her sister, Adeline Hessler.  She is survived by her three nieces: Paula Stone, Penelope Stone (Ron Edwards) and Polly McCubbin (Robert McCubbin), as well as five great-nephews, two great-great nieces and a great-great nephew.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Wegman Cottages in Greece for their care, kindness and devotion to Evelyn.

A private family interment will take place at a later date.  Donations in Evelyn’s memory can be made to the Yates County Humane Society 1216 NY-14A, Penn Yan, NY 14527.
