John “Jack” Neary Greece, NY: died on February 5th, 2025 at age 92. Jack was a beloved husband, father, uncle, cousin and friend. Born on November 1, 1932 in Rochester, Jack was the son of Michael and Beatrice Neary. He was born into a tight-knit family that included an older sister (Mary Lou) and eventually a younger brother (Emmett). Jack remained close to both of them for the rest of their lives. He attended Aquinas institute and later graduated from St. Michael’s University in Toronto. He was ordained a priest on June 29th,1961, joining the Basilian order, and taught for many years at Aquinas. Jack left the order in the early 1970’s and started a family with his wife Jean. Together they adopted a son, Michael, and raised their family in Houston, Texas. They were married for 53 years. Jack worked for many years as a school counselor there and devoted his life to education. He was a gentle and kind soul, always positive and welcoming, and generous to a fault. He loved watching football, tending to his garden, and sharing stories about his family’s history. He was very proud of his Irish heritage. Although Jack left the priesthood, the priesthood never left him and he remained a deeply spiritual and saintly man until the end.
John is survived by his sister in law, Janet Neary, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean Neary; his son, Michael Daniel Neary; his sister, Mary Lou Allen, and his brother, Emmett Neary.
Services held at a later date.
It is with great sadness I heard of the death of Jack, he was my first cousin and I had the privilege of meeting him together with Jean, Emmett and Janet when we met in Castlebar for the Neary Reunion back in 2005. His love of family history and his knowledge of the Neary’s of Shanvoley co Mayo helped so many people discover their roots.
God Bless
