Brockport, NY: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mollie Ann Steele, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who left us on October 21, 2024. Mollie was a beacon of light and joy, touching the lives of everyone she encountered with her warmth and kindness.
Mollie was born on November 28, 1937, and lived a life full of love and passion. She is predeceased by her parents (Margharita Burnside and Walter Burke) and her husband, Robert M. Steele. She is survived by her sons James Steele and his wife Terry, along with their children, Kailey and Robert, of Brockport, NY, and William Steele and his wife, Angela, along with their children and grandchildren: William & Madison Steele, Julia and Nathan Burrows, along with their children Theodore (Teddy) and Talia, Matthew Steele, Paul Steele, and Joanne Steele. Her family was the center of her world, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
A faithful member of St. Luke’s Church in Brockport, NY, Mollie’s spirit was deeply rooted in her faith. She found immense joy in singing and performing, often sharing her beautiful voice with the congregation and at local events. Her love for music extended to her passion for musicals, Broadway shows and the Rockettes, which she enjoyed immensely.
Mollie had a profound love for animals, especially cats and koalas. She found great comfort in their companionship. Her home was always filled with the warmth of her furry friends. She also had a deep connection to the ocean, finding peace and solace in its vast beauty.
An avid reader and gardener, Mollie spent countless hours immersed in books and tending to her garden, where she found tranquility and joy. She also loved shopping, always on the lookout for the perfect gift or a new treasure to bring home.
One of Mollie’s greatest joys was watching her grandchildren grow. Her love for Hobart hockey and “her” New York Mets was well-known, and she never missed a live or replay game to cheer them on.
Mollie’s life was a testament to the beauty of living with love, joy, and compassion. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and a lifetime of cherished memories. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A celebration of Mollie’s life will be held at Vay-Schleich and Meeson on Tuesday, October 29th from 4-7 PM with a prayer service immediately following at 7:00 PM where friends and family will gather to honor her memory and the beautiful life she lived. She will be laid to rest next to husband, Bob, at Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva, NY on Wednesday, October 30th at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Emergency Vet Services, Cat Ward https://givebutter.com/REVSNewHospital in honor of Mollie’s love for animals and her community.
Rest in peace, dear Mollie. You will be forever missed and always remembered.
My condolences and prayers to the family
Mollie had an enormous impact on my growth and formation as a musician during my high school years at Geneva High School, where she served as the choral director for the varsity singers. I have many fond memories of wonderful choral performances and singing as part of the cast for the GHS musicals. She was a talent and gift to the community and made a lasting impact on many.
Mrs. Steele was by far one of the most influential teachers in my life. The impact she had on me and the lessons she taught will forever be a part of me. Varsity Singers, Select Choir, high school musicals, trips to NYC are only a sampling of what I will remember about her. Every show tune I sing(and there are a lot of them) remind me of her. I will forever sing them in her memory!
My sincere sympathies for your loss. Mrs. Steele was a very memorable teacher. So many fond memories of Varsity Singers, Select Choir, singing telegrams, and musical rehearsals. I can still hear her voice in my mind. I have a selection of go to songs from High School that just became part of me and I would not have been introduced to them if it were not for Mrs. Steele. I am grateful to have known her.
For decades, Mollie Steele was the shining star of the Geneva High School faculty. I had the privilege of supporting her efforts on the Performing Arts Committee. The outstanding GHS spring musicals were a great run and they engaged hundreds of students. Her passion for music was surpassed only by her charisma. I am grateful to have known her and remember her wonderful sense of humor. She deserves a standing ovation as the curtain closes on a wonderful life.
I first met Mrs. Steele in 4th grade, when she included a few of us in the high school production “The Music Man” in 1980. I couldn’t wait to get to high school and be in more of her musicals, which were by far the most memorable moments of high school. The greatest lesson she taught me was after casting me in a lead role. She pulled me aside and said, “don’t let this give you a big head.” So. Along with music, she taught me humility. Thank you, Mrs. Steele.. my love and sympathy to all your family ❤️
Mollie brought such joy to so many people, whether they really knew her or not. Her smile and cheerful personality made those around her grateful to be in her presence. Age was no boundary, whether it was students or seniors, her beautiful voice touched everyone who heard it. I know that the years my daughters spent under her direction of the high school chorus and musicals will always be etched in their memories. The many spring school bus trips to “The Big Apple” to see fabulous Broadway shows, eat at popular restaurants and visit many landmarks will never be forgotten. One of my blessings in life is that I got to go as a chaperone on several of those trips, even after my girls aged out, thanks to Mollie.
God has another angel, whose voice will always sing to His glory. Peace, love and joy to her family.
There was no one on our faculty who worked harder to bring out the best in our students. She taught them that music was not only a talent but also a guide to character. For the school, GHS was seen as a high bar through her work. We were grateful to have her part of our tradition.
Thinking of all who knew Mollie. She was an integral part of my high school career and a great influence in my love for musical theatre. Wishing Jimmy and Billy along with their families peace and prayers knowing that their mom provides a lasting legacy to all who were privileged to know her.
So sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I am forever grateful to her for her guidance and voice lessons she gave me at your home in Gorham during my high school years. Her inspiration resulted in my career choice of music therapy.
Sorry to hear this. She was definitely an inspiration to all who had her. She continued to help me with vocals well after graduation when preparing to sing at weddings and funerals. No one better! I am sorry for your loss.
Mollie was much appreciated with her talent and inspiration in assisting me in the 5th grade production of the bi-centenial play in 1976. It was a great success with over 900 attending for the two night production. this will never be forgotten, rest in peace Mollie.
Truly an inspiration to so many. Mrs Steele had such a huge impact on so many students from GHS. I am forever grateful for our trips to New York City and of course, our Hight school musicals. My condolences to the family and thank you for sharing your mom with all of us!
Mollie’s part in the Gorham Pagent of Bands should not go unnoticed. She and Bob worked very diligently on those happy days Thanks be to God
