Esma K. “Essie” Climer, aged 94, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024, in Rochester, NY. Born on January 12, 1930, in Binghamton, NY, Essie was known for her kind and loving nature, often described as the brightest spirit among her family and friends.
Essie devoted many years to her career as a Keypunch Operator and later as an Administrative Assistant in the Industrial Engineering Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her diligent work ethic was not only evident at her job but also in the way she raised her three sons, instilling in them the values of hard work and perseverance.
A longtime member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Greece NY, Essie was deeply involved in her faith community. She was a choir member, lector, member of the altar guild, Sunday school and VBS teacher and confirmation mentor and office helper. She was part of the Friendship Circle, Joy Group, Knitting Group and took part in social justice activities that were close to her heart. Her hobbies included ceramics, sewing, knitting, cooking, baking, exercising, and puzzling, all of which brought her great joy and allowed her to connect with others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert Climer; parents, Michael and Asma Kenien; siblings, Phillip Kenien, Nellie (Douglas) Spitz, Faris (Nanette) Kenien, George (Esther) Kenien; step-brothers, Ernie and Roy Shaul; brother-in-law, Harvey Foster; step-son, John D. Climer and step-son in-law, Jim Preston.
Essie is survived by her sister, Marie Foster; sons, Thomas (Dodie) Hartmann, John (Martina) Hartmann, and James (Tarra) Hartmann; step-children, Chuck (Debra) Climer and Marie Climer Preston; step-daughter-in-law, Bonnie Climer; and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call Friday ( August 23rd)4-7 pm at Vay-Schleich and Meeson, 1075 Long Pond Road. Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday (August 24th) at 10:00 am at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4301 Mt. Read Blvd. The service will be available via Zoom at this link: us04web.zoom.us/j/573579627. Interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org/donate in memory of Essie, honoring her journey with Alzheimers & dementia and her lasting impact on all who knew her.
God has exclaimed “Welcome, good and faithful servant. Al has been waiting for you”.
Lord, thank you for blessing us so richly with Essie.
Essie was a light; such kindness and such love. We will all miss her very much.
A wonderful and amazing light has gone out for all of us who knew Essie. May she rest in peace with her beloved Albert.
Essie has always been such an inspiration to all of us who knew and loved her. She was one of those unforgettable people you felt honored and blessed to know – always so kind and caring, so genuine. She and Al are together once again. She will be greatly missed.

Our sympathies and love go to our cousins Tom, John and Jim and their beautiful family. Their great loss is heaven’s gain! Aunt Essie’s love and compassion have been instilled in you all…you will miss her every and love her always.
So sorry to hear about Essie’s passing. We knew Essie through the Climer family, specifically our long time friends Chuck and Debbie Climer. Always enjoyed visiting with Essie at get-together with the Climer family. Together again, may Al and Essie both rest in peace.
