Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute

Dorothy A. Seville (nee Eisenberg) passed on June 28, 2024, three months shy of her 98th birthday after a brief stay at Mt. Carmel House.  She was born to Loretta and Carl P. Eisenberg on September 30, 1926 in Rochester, NY. Dottie is survived by her daughter, Jan De Back (John); lifelong friend, Olga; Marianna and Michael, Marleen and Mike, niece Carol, family and many Friends.  Special acknowledgment given to Carol and Lucy at Grande Ville ALF, new Friends, that added such joy to her last active month of life.

Dottie, as many knew her by, remained very active up until her last two weeks. Throughout her life she remained active, especially with volunteering her time and talents as well as helping friends and family in times of need.  Her numerous hobbies included playing piano & organ, singing, dancing, playing cards and board games, volunteering in various capacities at church and at two area nursing homes.  Dottie loved to sew, crochet, do plastic canvas, word finds and jigsaw puzzles.  She enjoyed traveling and taking bus trips.  Even into her 90’s, inclusive through age 97, she continued to trim her shrubs, rake leaves & shovel a path through snow for visitors.  Reminiscing about and celebrating her German family heritage through Oktoberfests and “hanging with” the Germania Singers gave Dottie extra joy.

A three-time cancer survivor without any treatment, her true challenge came during her last two weeks of her life.  Her daughter especially wishes to thank the special nurses on the 5th floor cardiac unit and the palliative care / hospice workers at Rochester General Hospital.  Huge appreciation goes out to the special group of nurses and volunteers at Mt. Carmel House.  Thank you for your help, support and gentle caring of mom in her final few days.  Also, deep appreciation is sent to her family doctor, Dr. John Robb, for the excellent care he gave Dorothy throughout her many years.  One other word of thanks goes to John De Back who freely spent days without his wife so she could spend as much time with her mom once she stopped driving at age 95.

Friends may call Sunday, July 7, 2024, from 1-4 PM with a celebration of her life at 2:30 PM at Vay-Schleich and Meeson, 1075 Long Pond Road in Greece.  Entombment will be on Monday, July 8th at 1:30 PM.  Those able are welcome to meet the family inside the gate of White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Rd. in Pittsford, where a brief procession will accompany Dorothy to her final resting place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Rd., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 or to Mt. Carmel House, 288 Frisbee Hill Rd., Hilton, NY 14468.

What a wonderful life Dottie lead, a full and complete one. What a wonderful mother you had. We will miss visiting her on our trips back to Rochester. We have lots of nice memories of our time with her. I’m sure she, your dad and my mom and dad are catching up with each other in heaven now!

Just yesterday my son Ryan, said he remembered Dottie playing the piano at our house when they were young. She had a zest for life, so many interests, and giving her time to help others. The memories are endless of childhood stories with her and my Mom, Olga. What a team they were! God Bless her, as she is reunited with Bill and her family members in heaven.

Many, many fond memories of Dottie as our cousin’s family expanded to include Jan & her. She was family to us as our mom’s grew older together. My mom; Edith, lamented that she was the last one her age; and she will be missed greatly. She was always so cheerful and helpful and we enjoyed being the recipients of her thoughtful and creative gifts through the years.
Our deepest condolences to Jan on the loss of your mother. What a very special lady your mom was. ❤️

Words aren’t able to capture the true sense of how sweet, loving, caring, and nurturing that Dorothy was. She and my grandparents (Hilda & Myron) were neighbors since they moved onto Meadowbriar back in the 1960’s when their houses were built, and the rest was history. Countless summers for me spent in Rochester a week at a time, meant at least several interactions with Dorothy each visit. Really felt as if she was a third grandmother to me. Always charisma, investment, love, and care into our conversations together over the years – from a toddler all the way through my adult life. Anything from how I was enjoying Rochester that particular day of the week, what I did that day, how the weather was, to deeper conversations on what I wanted to do in life – was it something I’m passionate about, do I enjoy doing it, do I enjoy who I’m doing it all with etc. the list goes on.

It never failed, she always had some sort of gift basket with candy and goodies any kid would dream of whenever she came knocking by, even in my later years, she’d still hand them to me! The only thing that remained consistent was that her heart was truly in the right place, and her unwavering commitment to her friends and family (especially to my grandparents) was unmatched.

Tough, loving, caring, resilient, are just a few things to describe Dorothy by. But for those of us that have known her through many years, know she was so much more than that. We find some happiness and relief, to know that she’s peacefully resting in a much better place. My family and I will truly miss her, and we are just grateful that she was in our lives. I’m very sad I couldn’t be there for her wake and services, but my wife, Hannah, and I are there in spirit, and raising a glass to her today.

Deepest condolences to Jan and the rest of her family on Dorothy’s passing. She will be dearly missed.
