Vella Meadows (Tsitskovich) "Baba Vella"

Greece:  Tuesday May 25, 2021.  After 101 loving years, Vella (aka Baba) went home to join her husband, Casimer A. Meadows; grandson, Cassidy Meadows; son-in-laws Robert Miller, Joseph Penzato, sisters, Menca and Anca; brother George. She is survived by her children Dick & Susan Yolevich, Donna Meadows Manier, Casey & Terri Meadows (CO), Carol Meadows Miller, and JoAnne Penzato (New Paltz, NY); grandchildren, Tracy & Gary Gay, Vicki & Davin Measic (PA), Luther & Mariska Miller (CA), Quinn & Brad Meadows Lawson (IL). And a plethora of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and cousins. Vella emigrated from the former country of Yugoslavia, (currently Macedonia) in 1940. Vella was loved and respected by all who knew her. She was known for her beautiful flower gardens. She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, and faithfully participated in the annual Poppy Sale, for over 40 years. Her visitation will be held Friday, May 28th 4-7 PM at Vay-Schleich & Meeson 1075 Long Pond Rd. A traditional Macedonian funeral will be held Saturday, May 29th at 10:00 AM at St. Dimitri Macedonian Church 235 Telephone Rd. West Henrietta 14586.  Interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.     Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Our Aunt Vella made everyone who came into her life feel loved and special. Her memory will forever be tucked into our hearts, and a smile will come to our lips whenever we think of her. In fact, every single time I scrub my kitchen sink, I see her, and I smile, as I hear her laugh and say, “ A clean sink is my trademark.” Sending love and hugs to Aunt Vella and her family, Pauline and Nerm

    Wonderful memories fill my heart of Vella…in the early years growing up she was MRS. MEADOWS, loving Mother to my West Parkway Pals, Donna, Casey, Carol and Joanne. Vella LIVED well and LOVED much. She will be forever in our hearts.

    The Orange County Community College Community is saddened by the loss of Joanne’s mother. Ms. Joanne often shared many stories of her mom throughout the years to our students as many of us came to know and respect the love and admiration that Joanne felt toward her mother and especially her proud Yugoslavian/Macedonian heritage and culture.     She was a wonderful Lady, whom I looked forward to seeing her not to help her with her tasks,but just to be in her presence, made me feel warm. I will miss her .

    For those who need it. And trust me, everyone needs this… I had Aunt Vella over to my house about 10 years ago for a cooking lesson. I could not let the memory of this great dish fade into oblivion and had to try to capture it. It’ll never be as good as hers, but here’s what I gathered cooking side-by-side with Aunt Vella on that day many years ago. I’ve been making it regularly ever since, and I share this frequently. We’ll all miss Aunt Vella, but I will smile more broadly know every time I make this. Aunt Vella’s Chicken Capama INGREDIENTS 1 medium onion 1 bell pepper (not green, personal preference) 2 stalks celery 2 large roma tomatoes Olive oil Butter 2 tsps Chicken bullion powder Black pepper Paprkia Salt 8 boneless/skinless chicken thighs 1-1/2 cups Unlce Ben’s rice (your call here, Aunt Vella insists on it; I tend to agree) STEPS Par boil the chicken in 5 cups water – Reserve the water after boiling the chicken and setting it aside on a plate; add the bullion to the water Chop finely– that’s my preference –the onion, pepper, and celery; sautee in 1/4 cup olive oil and two tbls butter, sprinkle liberally with paprika and add chopped tomatoes after these ingredients start to soften up a bit Combine the rice, the reserved chicken water, as well as the sautéed veggie mixture; into a 9×13 pyrex pan. Spread the chicken evenly in the pan. Salt and pepper to taste; sprinkle copiously with more of paprika Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees or until water has been and/or there is a nice crispy layer along the top. Enjoy!

    D-oh! Sorry. That should be three cups of water in my previous post with the Chicken Capama recipe. And, was missing the word absorbed in this sentence…. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees or until water has been absorbed and/or there is a nice crispy layer along the top.

    I only had the privledge to meet Mrs. Meadows one time. I’d stopped by the family house to visit my college buddy Casey. Casey had a few other friends over and Mrs. Meadows directed Mr. Meadows to bring the boys some snacks. We sat down and enjoyed their company for a bit. Casey is the only Meadows family member who I truly got to know. What has always stood out about Casey to me, is his openess and heart-felt ability to accept and communicate with people from all walks of life. Terri once told me how in business Casey made it a win win for everyone, and that sounded so much like him. I knew Casey as a friend and a leader. He could effortlessly step into any situation and take control, with everyone in the rooms consent. While the Meadows sisters may believe it was their influence, I’m certain MaMa Meadows and of course Casimer were tremendous influences. Casey, if you know it or not, your family and your upbringing by your beloved mother, even influenced your choice of such a wonderful bride. 101 is such a good life, coupled with such good family and friends, such a good good life. Here’s to your mom my friends, hard to say goodbye, but I have such a good feeling about BaBa in my heart.., a life well lived. Be at peace.
