DeMatteo, Arthur Charlotte, NY:  Peacefully at home with his family, Art left us for Heaven at the age of 92 on May 4, 2020. Born March 29, 1928, Art grew up in Charlotte.  He attended Holy Cross School and graduated from Edison Technical High School.  Art served two tours in the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient.  After returning from the war, he worked as a mason at Ridge Construction and was a Supervisor at Eastman Kodak.   He retired in 1986. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Carmela.  Art was an artist and a musician, playing the piano and accordion.  He was an avid gardener, generously sharing his prized flowers, fruits and vegetable with friends and neighbors.  He enjoyed his marble collection and traveling with Carmela, his family and friends.  Art will be remembered for his huge gardens and his dedication to his family and friends, always welcoming all to his home for a glass of homemade wine and good food. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Carmela, and is survived by children, Diane Dixon (Dave Gielow), Tony (Mary Ann) DeMatteo, Carol DeMatteo, Susan (Gregg) Terry; grandchildren, John (Krystal) Dixon, Justin Dixon, Jason Dixon (Miranda), Tony (Becky) DeMatteo, Jen (Matt) Rubin, Ryan (Bethany) Terry, David (Sarah) Terry, Steven Terry,  and Ben Gielow (Katelyn); along with 11 great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the wonderful caregivers that lovingly cared for him at home for many years.

I remember Art as the boy who always came to school dressed in a white shirt & tie & neatly combed trimmed hair. I always thought that his mother must love him dearly to make sure of his daily appearance. He was always unassuming, kind & thoughtful. Years later when I met him again, he was that same person that I knew in school, still kind & thoughtful. I thought what a nice man he is. I am sure that God kept a very special place for him in heaven. Go with God, Art. It is a privilege to have known you. Love & prayers.

Our sympathy to Arthur’s children and extended family on your loss. We have known Arthur for years since he was a young lad. He was kind, warm, bright and very artistic, whether in his garden or his art work . He and Carmela visited my mom every Christmas after his parents passed. He had a happy life and gave that happiness to other. God blessed him .

Art’s family, Children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Art was a supervisor at Kodak Park, we had several conversations. He talked about his family, military service, garden and his accordion. He sure loved his family. A very fine person with a good value system.

I knew Art well from the ‘Old Days’ at Kodak Park, just a great person. As told in the poem ‘The Train of Life’ many persons get on and off during the course of life, but no matter how often, if ever, you see them again, you never forget them, and Art was surely one of them. In typical Kodak fashion, when we get to the pearly gate we will have to ask St. Peter, "Where is the nearest coffee shop?", as Kodaker’s always enjoyed ‘Break Time’. Didn’t know Art served in Korea, and like most persons, ‘Thanks to all Veterans who have served to keep us free’.

To Diane and family , I remember your dad to be the most delightful , loving, creative , man, who loved the earth and gardening . He had the magic touch for growing things – like many Italians I know !!! But what a happy face.. and how faithful he was his whole life. He loved his family like no other. And oh, did his family love him back . Diane , you should have no regrets , and know that you will be together again some day . Sending my fondest love and memories . Love Fran s
