Greece: Went home to be with his Lord July 13, 2014 at age 48. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Devan K. Helfer; mother, Elvira Helfer; brothers, John D. (Tammy) Helfer & Jason G. (Jaimie) Helfer; nieces and nephews, Justin, Ellie, Emilie, John, Joshua, Juliana, Jordan, Jayna, Jack, Jason & Ryan; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bruce & Christine Kulp; many dear friends. He is predeceased by his father, John L. Helfer. Jerry was the Deputy Supervisor for the Town of Greece and devoted his life to public service; he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 19th 7 P.M. at Hope Lutheran Church, 1301 Vintage Lane. In lieu of flowers, please forward donations to Wilmot Cancer Center (URMC.Rochester.edu/cancer-institute/giving) in his memory. Private interment in Falls Cemetery.

Joni & I are glad we had the opportunnity to get together with Jerry and you at your parents house in April. We are thinking of you at this time. We enjoyed being with you guys and will cherish our time with Jerry. We love you very much. Uncle Karl & Aunt Joni
My deepest sympathies to the Helfer family. I can’t help but smile when thinking about Jerry teasing me constantly all those years ago. ‘Rub rock salt….’ who know I would remember that saying 20 some years later. Praying for peace for all of you.
My sincerest condolences to the whole Helfer family on the loss of Jerry, he was a great public servant to the whole community and will be dearly missed !
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Devan and Jerry’s whole family. He was an awesome man of faith that brought his faith into all aspects of his life. We will treasure having known him and know he is now home with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
We are deeply saddened by Jerry’s passing. He was such a wonderful young man….kind, polite, smart and always pleasant with people. We aren’t to question why things happen; but it is difficult to accept the loss of a good person at such a young age. We can take comfort in the fact that we were able to count Jerry among our friends and we can rejoice knowing that he s now at peace with God.
We are so very sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. He was a great person, kind and nice to be around. We enjoyed his company and hospitality when we came to visit. He will be sorely missed by the Helfers and the Kulps and all his friends and associates.

I met Jerry about ten years ago, Christmas 2004, when you and your parents so kindly invited us, me and my kids to be with you for our first Christmas without Alain. You looked so happy, rosy cheecks of the beloved and in love young woman. Over the years, we discovered a very nice guy, a strong man too. My dear, I cannot express how much we are sorry for your loss. Jerry will be missed. He will always stay in our heart and mind. No matter the kilometers between us, may our loving thoughts give you some comfort and relief.

Dear Devon,
Jim and I are so sorry for your
loss. Jerry was an amazing wonderful man
with such a heart for God! We weep with
you Devon and can only try to understand your emptiness, but trust God , He
still is the God of Love and He knows your pain and fears. He will bring those loving relationships that
you and Jerry culminated over the years close to you and be assured He will
deepen His intimacy with you and fill that void.
Elvira, the loss of a son, and
such as wonderful son as Jerry is very painful. My Husband and I wept when Jim told
me the news. I thank God that we have a
Savior who cared and died for us, and we all responded to His call so we can
now look forward to that wonderful reunion of loved ones. You have a wonderful
Daughter-in-law, the other half of Jerry still with you. You know Jerry wants
you take care of her until that great reunion and what a joyous reunion that is
going to be.

I’m so sorry to hear about Jerry’s passing. I’ll always think of Jerry whenever I go to the Greece Public Library where Jerry got me my first job as a library page. My brothers and I hope to get together with you soon and we hope you are doing okay during this difficult time.

I met Jerry over 20 year ago when we worked on some political campaigns together. There was always a smile on his face even when we were out in the pouring rain putting in lawn signs and doing other necessary but often thankless tasks. We laughed our way through the work and through the lunch we always managed to make time for after. (I convinced him that because I was old enough to be his mother he had to listen to me and eat something before we went back to work!)
When you work in the trenches with someone, as I did with Jerry, you get to know the ‘real’ person. And Jerry was as genuine as they come – what you saw was what you got – an all too unusual thing in the career he chose. In Jerry’s case you got a caring, gentle and honest man with an incredible faith, a wonderful sense of humor and a true love of his family, community and country. His like is not often seen; he will be missed.
Dear Devan and family,
Our hearts go out to you all as you celebrate Jerry’s life today. Although we cannot be with you in person, please know that our thoughts and prayers are by your side today and every time we think of the wonderful man God created in Jerry. His loss is a blow to you, we know, but also to a much broader community of family, friends, constituents and strangers who had not yet had the opportunity to meet him.
