John F. Powers
Rochester: Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at age 85. Predeceased by his son, Daniel; brother, Robert. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joan Powers; his children, Thomas (Kathleen), Patricia (Mark), Susan (Alan), David (Colleen), Sharon; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many dear friends. John was an alumnus of Aquinas Institute, Detroit University and RIT.
Friends may call Sunday (June 12th) 1-4 PM at VAY-SCHLEICH AND MEESON, 1075 Long Pond Road. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday (June 13th) 10:30 AM at Holy Cross Church. Private interment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Cross Church in his memory.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I am so sorry. Love and memories will stay in your hearts forever.
It’s funny how our childhood memories come back to us when one we love and respect answers God’s call to join Him in Eternal Life. My Uncle John was remarkable for his love of God and Family. He was also gifted with a superb sense of humor, joy, and respect for even the smallest things and creatures in life. His enthusiasm and merriment were contagious. I remember fondly our many Powers family get-togethers, bowling during Thanksgiving and Easter, especially our many fishing jaunts that included Grampa Powers and my Cousin Tommy.
The skills of fishing are simple but profound. One merely tosses a lure or baited hook into the murky mysterious depths of water to be enthralled to catch a fish, or, to simply enjoy the waiting with great stories and mirth. We were not always successful catching fish, but learned much and enjoyed each other’s company greatly.
Like Simon, in Luke 5:4-11 and as depicted in the Book of Job, I learned the valuable skills of patience and perseverance from my Uncle John’s approach to fishing. Later, I found these skills proved quite valuable on the path of Life as I grew up and entered the adult world.
Although the passing of life and time are sometimes more rapid than desired the process and the lessons learned will be cherished forever. As time has passed, I still hold closely to my Uncle John’s lessons of humor, perseverance, and striving.
May God hold your soul close as you join Him, your family, and friends who have passed already. Thank you for your gifts. They will be as treasured as your memory.
My heartfelt condolences to Aunt Joan, all my Cousins, and Uncle John’s closest friends.

Dear Joan and family: So sorry to read of John’s passing. I wish I could be there for you as when you came to my sister, Susie’s, funeral in Mt. Morris a few years ago.
